Lung cancer. Coloured frontal X-ray of the chest of a male patient with squamous cell carcinoma (pale mass, top left) in the upper lobe of the right lung. This is a malignant (cancerous) tumour arising from the lining of the air passages. This type of cancer accounts for about 80 per cent of all lung cancers and is the most closely associated with smoking. Prognosis is usually poor as metastsis (spreading) occurs quickly.
