Paget's bone disease. Lateral X-ray of the skull of a patient with Paget's bone disease, showing osteolysis (bone breakdown) of the lower part of the skull, in dark grey. Paget's bone disease is a disorder of bone production in the body. The normal rate of bone turnover is disturbed. In the early phase of the disease, bone is broken down faster than it is made by the body. This leads to the formation of weak, painful areas of bone that are prone to fracture. Treatment is by pain relief and taking bisphosphonates, which are thought to promote healing of bone lesions. Severely deformed bones may require corrective surgery.
