Paget's bone disease. X-ray of a patient's hand showing hypertrophy (excess growth) and sclerosis (hardening) of the second metacarpal bone of the hand (white, second from right). Paget's bone disease is a disorder of bone production in the body. The normal rate of bone turnover is disturbed. In the later stages of the disease, bone is made faster than it is broken down by the body. This leads to the formation of thick, but structurally weak, painful areas of bone. Treatment is by pain relief and taking bisphosphonates, which are thought to promote healing of bone lesions. Severely deformed bones may require corrective surgery.
