Leg ulcer in a patient with high blood pressure. Known as a Martorell ulcer, this is a painful infection of the lower leg. It is typically associated with poorly managed cases of hypertension (high blood pressure). The small blood vessels that supply the lower leg become narrow and the lack of blood supply to the skin leads to cell death (necrosis) and ulceration. Treatment is by improving the management of blood pressure, and surgical debridement (cleaning) of ulcers to avoid infection and promote healing.
