Splenomegaly. Composite image of a computed tomograpgy (CT) scan and a coloured positron emission tomography (PET) scan of the abdomen of a patient with splenomegaly, or an enlarged spleen (green). The spleen acts as a filter for the blood. Splenomegaly is a symptom of a variety of diseases. It can be caused by lymphoma, bacterial infection, liver disease, or malaria. Treatment is of the underlying cause. If the splenomegaly cannot be reversed or the organ becomes too damaged, treatment is by surgical removal of the spleen (splenectomy).
