Water molecules in steam, computer artwork. Steam is a gaseous phase of water. Water molecules are formed of a single oxygen atom (red) and two hydrogen atoms (green), bonded covalently. At normal pressure, water boils into steam at 100 degrees Celsius. As the molecules gain energy, the most energetic leave the liquid and enter a gas phase.
