Engraving of Osman Nuri Pasha (1832-1900), Ottoman soldier, on horseback. Pasha is most famous for leading the Ottoman Empire Army during the Siege of Plevna (1877) in the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878). Against overwhelming odds the Ottoman Army resisted the advances of the Russians for five months. Osman was given the nickname 'Ghazi', which means warrior, or veteran, in recognition of his efforts.
