Red spider lily (Lycoris radiata) pollen, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The grains have a highly sculpted outer wall (exine), which may assist in their dispersal. The characteristic surface of pollen grains is used by botanists to recognise and classify plants. Pollen grains are the male sex cells of a flowering plant.
