Absent iris. Close-up of the eye of a patient with aniridia, the absence of the iris (coloured part of the eye). This is a congenital (present at birth) condition that usually effects both eyes. The iris is a ring of muscle that contracts and dilates to control the amount of light entering the eye. The lack of an iris causes poor vision and sensitivity to light. This patient also has cataracts, a clouding of the transparent lens of the eye, which is a common complication of aniridia.
