Ebola virus research. Scientists researching Ebola virus working with a guinea pig in a glove box. This virus causes ebola virus disease (EVD), a severe and often fatal disease that is transmitted to humans via close contact with the bodily fluids of infected animals. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhoea and haemorrhaging (internal bleeding). There is no cure for the disease, but three quarters of patients can recover if provided with sufficient medical support. Photographed in the The Pasteur Institute of Bangui, Central African Republic.
