Water molecule. Computer model of a molecule of water contained within a water droplet. Water, H2O, comprises an oxygen atom (orange) bonded to two hydrogen atoms (cyan). Water is a polar molecule, in which the oxygen atom has a slight negative charge while the hydrogen atoms have a slight positive charge. This causes the molecules to attract each other, which is responsible for it being a liquid, and for the liquid having a high surface tension. It is this last property that causes droplet formation. Just 18 millilitres (one mole) of water contains 0.6 trillion trillion molecules.
