Dermoid ovarian tumour. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through an human ovary showing a dermoid, or teratoma, ovarian tumour or cyst (centre). This is a benign (non-cancerous) tumour that arises from germ (sex) cells. Because germ cells develop into all the cells of the body, the tumour can contain a variety of different tissues, including bone, tooth and hair (pink). Treatment is with surgical removal of the tumour. Magnification: x2000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
