Haploid-diploid sexual cycle. Animation of the life cycle in sexual reproduction, showing the changes between haploid and diploid states, via the processes of meiosis and fertilization. In sexual reproduction, haploid cells or haploid organisms (n) alternate with diploid cells or diploid organisms (2n). But, in different organisms these pathways can considerably vary in proportion around this cycle. The stages shown in this cycle include pluricellular (multicellular) organisms, and zygotes, gametes, and germinal cells. Meiosis and mitosis are forms of cell division. Fertilisation is the fusion of gametes to form a zygote. The zygotes develop into the adult organism, which produces gametes or germinal cells to continue the cycle.
