Exocytosis, animation. Exocytosis is the movement of substances out of a cell. The substance to be either excreted or secreted is enclosed in a vesicle with a phosopholipid membrane. This vesicle is transported to the cell membrane and the two phospholipid membranes fuse. This fusion is mediated by SNARE proteins. Fusion results in the release of the vesicles contents to the extracellular space.
