Caption

Bone graft in the neck. Coloured X-ray showing the cervical spine of a 51 year old female patient who has had surgery for a herniated intervertebral disc in her neck. She has been given a bone graft (in the red area) to replace the damaged disc. The vertebrae above and below the graft (C5 and C6) are effectively fused together by the graft. Damaged intervertebral discs can impinge on nerves and the spinal cord, and in serious cases surgery is performed.
