Bone graft in the neck. Coloured X-rays showing the cervical spine of a 51 year old female patient who has had surgery for a herniated intervertebral disc in her neck. She has been given a bone graft (indicated by arrow) to replace the damaged disc. The vertebrae above and below the graft (C5 and C6) are effectively fused together by the graft. The neck is shown in side view in extension (left) and flexion (right). Damaged intervertebral discs can impinge on nerves and the spinal cord, and in serious cases surgery is performed.
