Distraction osteogenesis (bone lengthening). Coloured X-ray showing the right femur of a 25 year old male patient undergoing elongation of the femoral shaft. This involves cutting the femur (thigh bone) and inserting a telescopic orthopaedic device (micrometer pin and screws, coloured red and orange) into the shaft. The device is then extended by about 1 millimetre a day over several months, which induces new bone growth in the resulting space between the cut ends of the bone. This is often performed on individuals with bone deformities or shorter bones than normal.
