Lung cancer. Combined computed tomography (CT) and positron electron tomography (PET) scan of lung cancer (yellow, within the red cross hairs) in the left lung of a 60 year old female patient. This tumour is a small-cell carcinoma caused by smoking. A radioactive tracer, injected into the patient's bloodstream, has been taken up by the tumour. Lung cancers are most often caused by smoking, exposure to asbestos, or other forms of pollution. Treatment includes radiotherapy, chemotherapy and the surgical removal of all or part of the affected lung.
