Terra Nova Antarctic exploration. Spring Journey departure on 15 September 1911 by Robert Falcon Scott, Henry Bowers, George Simpson and Edgar Evans during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, the primary expedition objectives were scientific. Led by Scott, the shore party of 34 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. The Spring Journey was a short trip to prepare for their November 1911 attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. Scott, Bowers, Evans and two others died in 1912 returning from their journey to the South Pole. Photograph by Herbert George Ponting.
