Terra Nova Antarctic dog handlers. Expedition dog handler Cecil Meares (right, 1877-1937) and dog driver Dimitri Geroff (centre) cooking dog food at the blubber stove in the Discovery Hut at Hut Point on 3 November 1911 during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition and led by Robert Falcon Scott, a shore party of 34 explored on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott then attempted to reach the South Pole. Two days after this scene, Meares and Geroff went south to meet with Scott's polar party, turning back to base camp with the dogs on 11 December. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from the South Pole.
