Patient undergoing proton therapy to treat a malignant (cancerous) brain tumour. A custom-made mask immobilises the patient's head as a high energy beam of protons are aimed at the tumour. The main benefit of proton therapy is that most of the particle energy is deposited in the last few millimetres of travel, so most of the energy can be deposited inside the tumour. This is most important in brain tumours when damage to surrounding tissue can be extremely risky. Photographed in the Proton Therapy Centre, Orsay, France.
