Amoeba. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an amoeba, a single-celled (protozoan) organism. The amoeba has numerous, blunt pseudopodia (false feet) projecting from its body, which consists of a naked mass of protoplasm. In order to move, the amoeba extends a pseudopodium in the direction that it wishes to go, anchors it and pulls itself forward by contracting its cell body. The pseudopodia can also engulf food; this food is stored and digested within cavities (vacuoles) inside the cell.
