Surface texture calibration box. Box for calibrating optical instruments to measure areal (three dimensional) topography of a surface. This is a measurement of the texture, or roughness, of the surface. Changes in areal topography can change the way that a component functions and are increasingly being used in manufacturing. Photographed at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, UK.
