Caption

Plasma-assisted desorption ionisation (PADI) probe. This is a technique that is used to determine the chemicals present on a surface. A low power atmospheric pressure radio frequency plasma is directed at the sample surface. Molecules on the surface are ionised and released. They are collected by a mass spectrometer inlet close to the sample and analysed. The plasma beam used is cold and so can be used on biological tissue without damaging it.
