Fukushima nuclear disaster. Damage to a reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station on Japan's Pacific coast, caused by the March 2011 tsunami. On 11 March 2011, at 14.46 local time (05.46 GMT), a magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred 130 kilometres off the east coast of Japan triggering a devastating tsunami. The tsunami damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station, triggering events that led to the meltdown of three of the nuclear reactors and a leak of radioactive material. It became one of the world's largest nuclear incidents since the Chernobyl disaster of April 1986.
