Fukushima nuclear disaster. Damage to reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station on Japan's Pacific coast, caused by the March 2011 tsunami. On 11 March 2011, at 14.46 local time (05.46 GMT), a magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred 130 kilometres off the east coast of Japan triggering a devastating tsunami. The tsunami damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station, triggering events that led to the meltdown of three of the nuclear reactors and a leak of radioactive material. It became one of the world's largest nuclear incidents since the Chernobyl disaster of April 1986.
