Hepatitis B virus particles, artwork. The spheres are complete virus particles, known as Dane particles. The rods are surplus viral coat (capsid) proteins. These non-infectious antigens (foreign proteins) are used to make vaccines against hepatitis B. Hepatitis B is a disease characterised by inflammation of the liver, which can lead to liver cirrhosis, cancer and death.
