Helen Sharman (born 1963), British astronaut, being examined by a doctor at the Institute for Medical and Biological Problems, Moscow, Russia. In 1989, Sharman had applied to become the UK's first person in space, part of a total of 13,000 applicants (Project Juno). Sharman spent seven days on the Mir space station, launching on the Soyuz TM-12 spacecraft (18 May 1991) and returning on the Soyuz TM-11 spacecraft (26 May 1991). In 1993, Sharman was appointed an OBE and an honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. This examination is in 1989, during the selection process. The final choice to select Sharman was made in February 1991.
