Project Juno candidates. Four candidates to be the first British person in space (Project Juno) at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut training centre, Star City, Moscow region, Russia, in February 1990. Four were selected from 13,000 applicants (from left): university lecturer Clive Smith, food technologist Helen Sharman, Royal Navy physician Gordon Brooks and Army Air Corps major Timothy Mace. This was reduced to two (Sharman and Mace) and the final selection of Sharman made in February 1991. Sharman spent seven days on the Mir space station, launching on the Soyuz TM-12 spacecraft (18 May 1991) and returning on the Soyuz TM-11 spacecraft (26 May 1991).
