At centre is British astronaut Helen Sharman (born 1963). They are training in a model of the Soyuz spacecraft to be used for their mission. In 1989, Sharman had applied to become the UK's first person in space, part of a total of 13,000 applicants (Project Juno). She was selected in February 1991. She spent seven days on the Mir space station, launching on the Soyuz TM-12 spacecraft (18 May 1991) and returning on the Soyuz TM-11 spacecraft (26 May 1991).
