Philip Strax (1909-1999), US radiologist. Strax was a doctor in New York, and when his wife died of breast cancer at the age of 39 he began a campaign to promote the use of mammography for early detection of the disease. He helped conduct a study involving over 60,000 women which established conclusively that early detection significantly reduced the mortality rate of breast cancer. Dr. Strax opened pioneering breast cancer clinics as well as New York's first mobile mammography units.
