Caption

Sequential Compression Device. An inflatable sleeve on a patient's leg during oesophagogastrectomy surgery. The sleeve is part of a Sequential Compression Device (SCD), and is attached via plastic tubes to an air pump which sequentially inflates and deflates sections of the sleeve. The waves of pressure squeeze fluids through the tissues of the lower limb, ensuring movement of venous blood. This can help prevent deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and cardiac depression, which are risks during surgery.
