Scanning electron micrograph (sem) of a Springtail scale (order Collembola, genus Podura). Springtails are wingless primitive insects that have existed for millions of years unchanged and are considered to be living fossils. They have an ability to flick their tails downwards which causes them to spring into the air to avoid predators. Magnification x13880 (3415 at 10cm wide).
