Thale cress pollution research. Close-up of thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana) being grown in a nutrient medium. This research is examining the effects of pollution on thale cress, which is an indicator species used to track the effect of pollution. The growth rate of the roots is used as an indicator of the toxicity of certain chemical compounds. This research is being carried out at the LEB (Lipides Environnement et Biotechnologies) Aquitaine Transfert, a CNRS research centre at the Bordeaux Segalen University in Bordeaux, France. Photographed in 2012.
