Congenital nevus with black dot but found to be benign on excision. Nevi are caused by overactivity or abnormality of melanocytes (skin cells that produce the brown pigment melanin). Most nevi are harmless and do not require treatment. However, if a nevus should suddenly appear, grow, start bleeding or change colour, medical advice should be sought to rule out the possibility of skin cancer.
