Illustration of mucositis, a condition in which the mucous membranes of the digestive tract become inflamed and ulcerated; with a close-up view of large intestine histology. Normal simple columnar cells of the large intestine are misshapen and have become cuboidal. Goblet cells decrease along withe an increase of mucous secretions. The lamina propria becomes packed with neutrophils. Altered gut motility leads to less water absorption and will ultimately lead to diarrhoea. Cell types shown within the crypts of Lieberkuhn include enteroendocrine (chromatin) cells, goblet cells and absorptive cells.
