Caption

Illustration showing the future possibilities of bladder augmentation. Shown is a scaffold of SIS material (small intestine submucosa which is biodegradable and supports three dimensional cell growth) seeded with stem cells in vitro. In its current form, bladder augmentation involves the surgical removal of strips of tissue from the intestinal tract and their addition to the tissue of the bladder; this increases bladder volume and decreases the percentage of the bladder involved in contraction, resulting in lower internal pressure during urination.
