Dorsal view of the thyroid gland shown in relation to the pharynx and parathyroids. The thyroid works in conjunction with the parathyroids (in red) which are embedded on the posterior aspect of the gland. The four small parathyroid glands produce calcitonin which lowers blood calcium levels by inhibiting the rate of decalcification.
