This enhanced coronal (frontal) section of a human brain specimen demonstrates evidence of severe, advanced Alzheimers disease. There is severe atrophy of the hippocampal formations which are very important in memory. There is associated enlargement of the temporal horns. In addition there is generalized temporal lobe atrophy with enlargement of the sylvian fissures.
