Despite its mode of action not being understood, electroconvulsive therapy, or ECT, is still recommended for use as a therapy for unresponsive severe depression. In ECT, seizures are electrically induced in patients under anesthesia. There is a significant risk of memory loss. Differences in application of treatment come from variation in electrode placement, electrical wavefront and frequency of therapy.
