The posterior portion of each lumbar vertebra articulate through a pair of facet joints. In this example, the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebra can be seen joined by these two facet joints encapsulated by a fibrous capsule. The lower half of the facet joints can be seen at the top portion of the upper vertebra. In this view the two outward projecting bones known as the transverse process and the backward projecting bone known as the spinous process can also be seen.
