Layered metal catalyst, scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) image. These 'Dancing Triangles' are formed by sulphur atoms on a layer of copper, which in turn rests upon a base, or 'substrate' of ruthenium. Scientists at Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, USA, are studying this type of configuration to understand how metal behaves on top of another metal. Layered metals are often used as catalysts, such as those that clean pollutants from automobile exhaust gases in catalytic converters. Image published in 2001.
