NSLS II particle accelerator construction. Overhead view of the construction activity on the National Synchrotron Light Source II particle accelerator at Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, USA. When completed in 2015, this will be the world's leading storage-ring-based synchrotron light source. Synchrotron radiation is emitted by accelerating electrons in storage rings. The radiation produced allows the characterization of the atomic and electronic structure, chemical composition, and magnetic properties of materials in a wide range of temperatures and environments. Photographed in October 2011.
