Balata rubber tree, 19th-century artwork. Previously known as Mimusops balata, this tree is now called Manilkara bidentata. It is found in northern South America, Central America and the Caribbean. The latex is used to produce a gum (chicle) and products such as golf balls. Artwork from the 22nd volume (second period of 1898) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
