Frozen mammoth eaten by huskies, 19th-century artwork. These eskimo dogs are eating a prehistoric mammoth that has been exposed by melting of the frozen Arctic tundra. These specimens are preserved through a process of natural mummification when buried rapidly in mud or silt that then freezes. Such specimens often partially degrade prior to discovery, due to exposure or to being scavenged. Artwork from the 23rd volume (first period of 1899) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
