Anaesthetic gel. Collapsible accordion-type syringe containing Cathejell jelly, a surface anaesthetic gel with active ingredient lidocaine (a local anaesthetic). The gel is used in catheterisation, endoscopic procedures and tracheal intubation (where a tube is inserted into the trachea for artificial ventilation). The gel lubricates passage of the tube or endoscope, and the anaesthetic reduces sensitivity and pain.
