Electrocardiograph (ECG). A male patient at rest whilst an electrocardiograph (ECG) records the electrical activity of his heart. The cuff on his arm is used to monitor blood pressure. Various electrodes taped over his chest and back are connected to an ECG machine (not visible). This equipment is used in the diagnosis of cardiac ischaemia, the restriction in the heart's blood supply which occurs in coronary artery disease, and also for detecting abnormal heart rhythms. Typical patients might be suffering from angina (pain in the chest on exercising) or being assessed in the weeks following a heart attack.
