Exercise ECG. A patient undergoing exercise testing on a treadmill, whilst an electrocardiograph (ECG) records the electrical activity of her heart. Electrodes taped over the patient's chest are connected to the ECG machine in the foreground. A nurse assesses the results. This technique is used in the diagnosis of cardiac ischaemia, the restriction in the heart's blood supply which occurs in coronary artery disease, and also for detecting abnormal heart rhythms. Typical patients might be suffering from angina (pain in the chest on exercising) or being assessed in the weeks following a heart attack.
