Smallpox vaccine production. Laboratory technician using a machine known as a lyophiliser, which creates transportable freeze-dried vaccines, able to be carried into rural areas. This was part of the effort to inoculate Nigerians during the worldwide Smallpox Eradication Campaign of the 1960s and 1970s. Photographed in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1967.
