Cochlear implant. This is the internal part of the cochlear implant, surgically placed under the skin just behind the ear. The round section consists of a magnet (lower right) and antenna (surrounding the magnet). The housing at centre right contains the electronics for processing sounds. The wire curving round to centre left carries the electrodes that are inserted into the patient's cochlea. The external parts of the system are not shown. This is an implant from the MED−EL cochlear implant company, headquartered in Switzerland. Photographed in 2014.
